Statement Of Intent:
For my chosen project 'Portraits', I intend to produce a portfolio full of different types of portraits. There are many types of portrait photography such as traditional, candid, lifestyle, group, and surreal portraits, I chose this theme because I think I can use my imagination in my work and explore various camera techniques. I also can improve the skills, I have already learned and show them in my portfolio.
I will be focusing on close-ups and playing around with full-body shots as I can capture the background. Allowing the background to be contrasting with the model and much more methods will make it look more attractive and capture more attention.
Close-ups will be my main focus as I find that close-ups of people's faces interest me the most, because you can tightly frame the model's head capturing every detail on the face, and to me, it adds emotion to the scene. I have chosen to look more deeply into close-ups because I can explore more and develop my confidence in a theme that I wouldn’t really have chosen myself.
Salford Quays will be my first location. This is a great location to go to as the buildings and architecture there are fascinating. Capturing them in my background will give a lively look to my images. The natural lighting and the river flowing will be effective and drastically enhance the image.
Firstly, I will start by researching the photographer Taya Iv because Her photography often focuses on intimate, quiet, and personal moments; I inspire to replicate her work as it caught my eye because she uses double exposure in her pictures, and this is what separates her from the ordinary photographer. She also bases her work on the pure beauty of the model no matter how they look and tells a meaningful story from her pictures, and Pablo Thecuardo focuses on close-ups and uses Photoshop to make his pictures more distinctive and creative as he edits a close-up on the main body of the model. This is what I aim to achieve as it's effective and gives a unique modern look. I admire both of these photographers' types of portrait photography as just like they stood out o me, I want my work to do the same to people around the world. I will be taking a variety of photos from different angles such as bird's eye view, worm eye view, low angle, frog eye, and more. I will also adjust my model's pose in each shoot allowing the images to vary from others. To gain the most skill, I will also try to adjust the settings such as the f/stop and experiment with the changes Using a fast shutter speed also will be useful and critical for my images to be crisp and result in clear resolution and won't capture my model blinking or making unwanted facial expression as the shot will be taken quickly. I would like to keep it as raw as possible making it have more of a natural look on it and if need be I will enhance it by editing it on Photoshop to a high level. I will also watch tutorials on edits in the style of Thecuardo.
To help me more I will use social media such as Pinterest to regularly look at mood boards and imitate particular photographers, I find unique and whose work I like, and Instagram as I can check what's trending and what work people are enjoying and worth looking at and replicate that edit from them to my portfolio. This project will teach me about the 'Portraits' subject and open my eyes to the various ways people may make this project their own. I would want to use Photoshop to my advantage so that my work can appear highly professional. I also want to concentrate on photography and strengthen my skills, which will help me with potential projects in this subject.
From the start of this project, I am aiming to take portraits of people's faces and will make progress by editing the images with Photoshop throughout this project.
To wrap this project up, I would present to you a final gallery of 5-10 images which will conclude with some edits as you will my technical Photoshop edits and some raw images as you can see my development and skill with the camera and adjusting the settings to suit the environment and task I have. I would want my gallery to be used for inspiration and be recognised by Thecuardo and Taya themselves to know how skilled I really am.

Mock Analysis 1:
Content:
The image is of a portrait capturing half a woman's face. The use of the flower's silhouette across the woman's face contrasts with her pale skin. To me gives a hint of emotion as her facial expressions are blank. The woman has also applied shiny lip gloss to attract more attention, it is one of her alluring features. Her eye is the main aspect in this image as it is heavily emphasized and has a blend of earth and ocean colours and a mix of caramel and sepia in the hair to make it look brighter than the other colours and uses the facial features of a sweet spot and rules of third. I think the image has been taken at eye level as this is allowing the model to look directly at you. This close-up image focuses on her facial features such as her freckles, eyes, lips, and eyebrows: this is done to give you a clean and clear image of her face. The texture on her face and the freckles look even and nicely glazed with the light, her hair looks silky. Pastel colours have been used throughout this picture to blend with each other and complement to make the picture run smoothly.
Composition:
There is a flower in the foreground, which is out of focus so the woman's facial features are more clear to the viewer. The woman herself is in the middle ground and the greenery behind the subject is in focus as the background. Her eye is a strong focal point in this photograph which grabs the viewer's attention. This image was taken at eye level pose as you can see her face is straight and looking forward into the camera. This creates the viewer to be drawn in. The photographer may have used a medium depth of field the flower is not focused and her face is in focus. An ISO which is best for portraits. I think the photographer has used the right amount of exposure and has used aperture as the face is all in focus and gives a natural look and her true feelings being concealed. They didn't use Photoshop to manipulate this image but if they did they could’ve improved the features like the lips and brightened them and added a shine to it to make it really stand out to the viewer and enhance her beauty of her. To add more shine to the lips, the photographer could have used the dodge and burn tool. The flower branch frames this photo nicely and creates a nice and beautiful atmosphere for the portrait even with the shadows created by it to the effect of mystery and it is very clear. Using the rule of third attracts the audience's eye to the photograph and adds more emphasis to the subject within the image. This shot has not been done in a studio as you can see in the top right corner of the background and has used natural lights; I don't think the photographer used a tripod even though the shot is framed exactly at eye level and clear and discreet.
Connection:
I like this photographer's work because they know how to frame a portrait image as they know how to make it look dynamic and what features to focus on. Their work is a great piece of portrait imagery to add to my website and be inspired by. I also feel like the photographer likes to work with natural looks/styles and dislikes using Photoshop to enhance beauty as everyone looks good whatever they may look like and this could be the meaning behind the photo. Some strengths are the shine and detail some features have on this portrait such as the lips and eye however one thing that could've been better if the model was angled a little different and in a few more positions so we could see the crevices of her face more in depth and have a few shadows to make the picture look more unrealistic and attract the viewer a bit more. I will use this type of portrait in my own work because it makes your photographs look like it's done by a professional and improves your skills.
Inspiration:
For my portrait images, I aim to achieve similar photographs to this photographer. As I feel the photographer has captured a professional look that creates a high finish, this is something I desire when taking my photographs. I will use this picture to help me frame my work with an object in it or add shadows to improve my photography skills. I would like to improve on ways in which to take my photographs professionally. I will add shadows and finish it off with calm and pastel colours to make it similar to this piece of portrait image. This will then allow me to be more creative when working on Photoshop as I will have a variety of quality pictures to use. In Photoshop, I would like to experiment more with colour and create my own backgrounds.

Content:
This image has double exposure. The background of a forest has been used in the model's upper body and in his head. The man has a blank expression and is looking away from the camera. The picture is in a black and white filter which could possibly show how the model feels. You can see spots on his face that might have been caused by stress and trouble hence the black and white filter and the expressions. The trees being reflected onto the person expresses the boredom and the lack of interest of the model in the image.
Composition:
The photographer has not used many rules but has used leading lines to strengthen the picture and are bold as you can see the outline of the head and body to make the viewers be attracted to the head and wonder how it looks so complex and how blended it in nicely. The rule of thirds has been positioned strategically making the nose a possible sweet spot or the lips can be one because of the shine on them. This was most likely taken by using a tripod at eye level as the head is bang on in the middle and central focal point in a professional studio. The photographer has possibly used a f/stop of 15 to make the photograph look clear and see the features on his face. The ISO used is around 400 as it's clear but it looks a bit grainy on the edges. The photographer has had this image edited on Photoshop as the effect double exposure is only done by using Photoshop and he has saved a picture from google and uploaded it behind the selected piece you choose and used the blending brush to make the top of his head blend nicely into the background then changed to a monochrome theme to add emotion to the picture. This edit looks nice and complex although, there is no specific design some may call it a pattern because the monotonous structure on the top of the models head and the bottom looks like trees in a forest and the reflection of it has probably been caught on a drone to capture the vast trees and the background.
Connection:
These photographs look nice with the effect it has and how it's manipulated the viewers through the techniques used. I love how the photographer has used the blending tool and smooths the picture into the background and gives it a nice effect. These types of portrait images look fascinating and really improve your photography skills and camera skills to capture the picture in focus so it’d look appealing to add to your website. The weakness of this image is the expression of the model blending with the colours to give a dull look so it may need a bit more colour and the darkness in the eyes are a bit unclear and should be a bit more colour or manipulated so we can get an idea of the true meaning behind this image.
Inspiration:
This picture is one of my favourite from the photographer's shoot and wish for my work to be identical if not very similar as this links heavily to my work and will be a nice finish off to my portrait theme. I will have to crop my model out cleanly without any little parts which will make the cut messy and disrupt the photograph. The fact it's a close up supports what I'm doing and will provide great assistance for me as I will try to recreate this but perhaps more of a jolly and happy expression on my model.
Analysis 3:
Context:
Pablo Thecuadro was born in 1992 in Zaragoza, Spain. He is a photographer and collage artist who works on both commissioned and self-initiated projects. Pablo Thecuadro's collages go beyond the simple combination of beautiful images; His work is a deep, elegant, and abstract observation that brings back to reality, the human essence. In his interview with Fashion Atlas, he states his work as “I love simple but strong pictures, a kind of ‘minimalistic’ collage.”
In a statement, the artist explained his works: “The collages I make express the duality in the human being, who we want to be versus who we really are and what part of us we show to others. Collage art is a never ending process, you can put as many images you want together over and over again.” This suggests that he likes to add the opposites of a human and collide them together through his work and what makes them successful.

The photograph represents the two sides a person can have. This is an abstract picture with a surreal touch. This picture is part of a collage and which has many textures and colours.
Content:
Madrid-based artist and photographer Pablo Thecuadro uses fashion editorials, some photos shot by himself some shot by other photographers, to create something new. He crafts abstract images by cutting and editing them together digitally. He really considers his compositions and how he layers his images. Thecuadro doesn't use traditional fashion photography. The clothing he uses is unusual as well, he structures the clothing differently. The use of a black and white portrait is framed by colour, the backdrop goes from black to white. When I look at this picture, I first noticed the out-of-scale portrait imposed on the model's body. He is drawing attention to the model's face which is unusual in fashion photography.

Composition
In this picture, there’s quite a lot of removing, adding and re configuring certain parts of each photograph, Thecuardo creates a visual metaphor and uses editorial images from other photographers as well as his own, he arranges by putting them together with a cutter. He refers to the way we hide and change certain parts of ourselves based on external conditions. Pablo merely focuses on the central focus point on the eye looking directly at you in a black and white contrast to create the atmosphere to be spooky and eerie. Also, he uses a variety of textures such as felt wool and knitted wool to structure the photograph, there's also triangles in the clothing to enhance the image. In the background radiant to contrast with the woman to draw more attention to her.
Comment:
I like Pablo Thecuardo work as it's fascinating and unique in it's own way. It will help me a lot as I can already see how I can work his style. I could even print my actual photographs and cut them out and add images in the same style of Pablo or I could use Photoshop to manipulate my photos. Following his path, I feel will help me make progress in my project and be the start of my pathway to become a professional photographer.

Poses Moodboard:
I have hand-picked these images of Google as I aim to do a sport clothing shoot and these look reasonable. The background really compliments and blends in with the clothing of the model. I also like the red and black contrast as it catches the viewers eyes. I have done full boy images as I want everything to be captures as portrait doesn't always have to be the face as the clothing can speak a message. The marks and scribbles on the picture were created by Photoshop and add some fun to the picture possibly claiming that playing sports can be fun and its what you get after working hard. This will guide and influence me to produce my work to that level as a minimum.
Edit Moodboard:
While looking through more moodboards, I fell in love with these complex edits and geometric shapes with the bright colours contrasting with the rest of the image. This will be my inspiration as well and using complex structure's and edits like these will boost my grade.
Plan 1:
Shoot 1:
Best Image: This is my best picture because the lighting is excellent and the shadow is dramatic. My model has a blank expression just like the ones in the mood board. They yellow contrast nicely with the blue in the background and his eye is at the rule of third sweet spot. I used the right amount of ISO which was 300 to make sure I capture every detail on my models face making it well focused. Worst Image: This is my worst picture as the model posing isn't prepared and isn't magazine quality. On the right side a bit of the background is visible to the audience. The ISO has not been on the right amount resulting in a grainy image and the body being slightly brighter than I wanted. Also, the backdrop colour is variated across the image as in some areas its darker and lighter in others. |
Best Image: This is my best because my model pose is prominent and clean and the eyes are strong, there is a leading line on the arm and body. The lighting has produced was great to create a dramatic shadow and make this look like something similar to a model in a sports magazine. He's also looking directly at you. However, the shutter speed is slightly too much as the picture isn't in HD and is shaky a bit. |
Plan 2:
Salford Quays Trip:
Imperial War Museum:
Best Image:This is my best image because you have leading lines in the image and the pose and camera angle I achieved makes this look worthy enough to be on a front cover like the Boohoo models. The symmetrical patterns in the background balance the picture. The gentle touch of sunlight on my model's face has a deeper meaning that people have 2 sides to themselves the part you want to see looks all nice whereas the other side is quite the opposite. The framing is excellent from a worm's eye view angled nicely as well.
Worst Image: I could've done better because the theme is a portrait and the model isn't even looking at the camera and there are other people in the shot which makes it looks unprofessional, this is why its the worst one for me however the tank behind my model is all captured in the shoot and has created a strong leading line. |
Salford Quays Bridge:
|
The Lowry
Best Image:This is my best image because my models are in the middle by using the rule of thirds and the tower in the back is a strong leading line. I have used a fast shutter which has resulted in the image having a clear focal point and the models are emphasised with the bold colours of their clothing and the contrasting colours in the backgrounds. I have used the rule of thirds when framing this picture as the building's unique structure. The ISO is a notch too high being exposed too much as the sky isn't really in focus and does not capture the details such as the clouds and birds.

Mock Edit:
In my mock edit, I picked my best portrait image and adjusted the colour balance which took real perfection and good colour co-ordination. After, I lowered the exposure to darken the background colour to make the glow which I would've added later on to really stand out and attract the viewers eye especially the ball being in a sweet spot. I then went on the setting area to see the distribution of each element of the photograph and the amount as well. When it was all checked up for the last time, I chose the circle glow tool to brighten the colour of the football and add a outer glow hence the lighting reflecting on my models shoulder and face. Lastly, all that was left was to enhance the shadows in the image which I completed to a high quality and it was completed.
Edit Mood board:
This mood board I have chosen consists of neon effects created via Photoshop and adding symbolic shapes and symbols playing around with our model. I will try to imitate this by watching YouTube videos to support me as it requires lots of skill knowledge of Photoshop. I also will have to adjust the saturation, contrast colour and good blending and lasso tool kit.
Edits on Photoshop:
In this image, I was the first to experiment with this neon effect and how get familiar with the tools. I picked a good portrait picture of my model Rejuan and then the Polygon Lasso tool to select him and not the background. I then smoothed my model out and got rid of all the sharp edges. Lastly, I dragged over his picture to the neon angel effect and placed him accordingly.
Edit 2:
This is similar to the first neon edit and follows all the same steps. However, my refining skill was more challenged by my teacher equating in the picture being cleaner than the first one.
Edit 3:
In these edits, I created my own made one to make my models look stunning and worthy enough to be used on the front cover of the magazine which was what I aimed for. I provided evidence of my work with snapshots so you can see the process I went through to reach my final image.
Edit 4:
This is my first complex edit and looks quite professional to me and my peers and I received positive feedback and is delivered cleanly. I used one of my pictures of my two models together and placed a gradient overflow on top of the picture going from pink in the bottom right corner and being spread out across the page then I used a glitch effect which took a long time. It came out quite well for my first time and I am happy with it. It adds a sense of mystery and malfunctioning so the viewers can't see the true image like the image is an illusion or stimulation and leaves the viewer questioning.
Edit 5:
This is my second complex edit as I took inspiration from a Mitre ad campaign and based this edit upon it. I used my model as the main character and labeled him as one of the best footballers with an astronomy design in the background and clean-cut patterns on the side. This edit could've been a bit better if I framed the model possibly at a better angle.
Edit 6:
I used inspiration from album covers by musicians I enjoy and listen to. NWA is the group that they're in. The person on my model's top 'Ice Cube' was part of that group. Their music was more on the aggressive side of rap music often occurring problems and issues with the police. That's why I thought it was suitable to add that cameo on the bottom right to represent what their music and lifestyle are about.
Edit 7:
This edit is similar to the one before. I like this image more as my model is angled nicely and contrasts nicely with the background. I based this on a 'Vogue' magazine as theirs is for the rich and wealthy and I wanted it to be the same as it.
Edit 8:
I attempted to replicate the photographer I did an analysis of Pablo Thecuardo and honestly looks exactly the same if not better. I got 2 different images of the same model one with a black and white tone and one raw image with natural colours. I used the magnetic Lasso tool with the curve effect the crop out his jacket and did the same to the raw image and fit it within the space. The raw image looks in focus and has exposure amount with the shutter speed being appropriate as I can capture the details of my model's face that contrasts with his black clothing. Overall, I am proud of this attempt and will try more to make myself improve.
Edit 9:
This was my first try at the Pablo Thecuardo effect on my image as I chose 2 photographs one being the standard colour of my model on the bridge and the other being black and white zoomed in on his face and used the free-form pen tool to crop out half the body and insert the black and white image over. This is not the best however is a decent start, I will create more to support my skills in the hope to imitate Pablo the best level I can.
Edit 10:
These two edits were inspired by Pablo Thecuardo as I imitated him and my end image looks quite professional and smooth and I added a overlapping old text over the black and white to give my image a deeper meaning to differentiate my work for Thecuardos work and make mine more unique.
Edit 11:
Here I combined 2 complex edits which were the Thecuardo effect with the magnified face in the body and overlaying that with money overlay text and implemented some pink/red colour patterns going from the lower body to his shoulder.

Evaluation:
I had to choose 'Portraits; as my project, we were able to pick our own models and own shoots so we can be independent with our work to really express our photography skills. It was quite a learning curve. There were a few hurdles as I've not been in the portrait file in photography before getting told to pose a certain way could be uncomfortable for some not getting the photographs you want. I also gained valuable and key information about the equipment photographers use a one professional photographer came in Justin and introduced his equipment to us, the techniques you need to ace this project, and exclaimed their benefits.
What I enjoyed the most was doing shoots as I had to direct my models and put my imagination into reality. I had to choose interesting locations and overall had a good time with my friends during the course. Also, meeting Justine was an honor as it opened my eyes to where photography can take you, and sitting down speaking to him, and learning about the careers you can go to really sparked an interest in me. Furthermore, advancing my knowledge of camera systems and techniques and rules to include in your pictures to make them stand out from the ordinary was very useful and I really cherished that moment.
Researching my inspired photographer Pablo Thecuardo gave me an insight into professional photography and knowing what it takes to be at the highest level as them.
I would like to develop my images more by using Photoshop and improving my skills on that as it's key to photography and if I want to pursue a career in that field. Also can let me edit my pictures to my own satisfaction. The edits I have produced are of professional skill and honestly high grades. A lot of time and effort has gone into this and has improved me as a person.
